The Upper Stinker Lake has one of the highest concentrations of soda ash of any lake in the world. When it holds water, a rich underwater world of specialised brine shrimp develops here, which in turn attract a wide variety of wading birds. The depression of the Stinker Lakes used to be part of Lake Neusiedl and was separated from the eastern shore of the lake in the course of the lake dam created by wave action.
