The Sanctuary of the Madonna del Carmine or "del Ciavanis" is the highest-altitude sanctuary in the Lanzo valleys, positioned on a plateau from which there is a fantastic view of the Val Grande di Lanzo. The recently renovated building is of 18th-century origin and preserves numerous ex-votos.
The trail climbs quite steeply, ascending wide pastures and alpine meadows. Given the good exposure, the trail often clears snow as early as the late spring season.
Descending along the silvo-pastoral road, we deviate onto a path to also visit the roc d'le Masche, a curious huge boulder whose singular forms of erosion have been attributed by legend to the masche (women with supernatural abilities) who took the boulder to destroy the devil's bridge in Lanzo, but, stopped by the devil, were forced to rearrange the large stone, but with great effort: that is why they left marks on it.

Take the trail that starts just above the parking lot and crosses a beautiful meadow. The trail then continues to the edge of the forest. Neglect the fork to the left that leads directly to the roc d'le Masche, which will be the return trail. The trail then crosses the stream and begins to climb steeply into the bush. You then reach some wide alpine pastures and continue climbing until you reach Alpe Paglia inferiore. Continue climbing, ignoring the detour to Alpe Paglia superiore, and after a short while take the stone staircase with its 366 steps up to the sanctuary.
From the shrine cross the meadows northwest of the shrine to take the dirt road downhill. Follow it to an elevation of about 1792 m where you meet a thin path that descends through meadows and after reaching a couple of alpine pastures reaches the roc d'le Masche. Alternatively, you can continue along the dirt road and return comfortably to the hamlet of Vonzo.
From the roc d'le Masche a path descends into the woods until it crosses the uphill route: then turn right and reach the starting point.
Footwear with non-slip soles, wind/rain cover, a warm layer, hat and sunglasses, water reserve are recommended.
There are no refreshments along the route, so you need to stock up on water and food.
Take the Lanzo valleys, just before Ceres turn right at the traffic light and enter the Val Grande di Lanzo. Upon reaching Chialamberto turn right and follow the signs for Vonzo and Candiela. Then reach Vonzo, continue on the road around the hamlet to the parking lot near the church.
Ample parking near the church
Spend 5 minutes walking among the stone and wooden houses of the old alpine village of Vonzo-it will be like stepping back in time!
