Dravograd is located in the crossroads of the three valleys: Mežica, Mislinja and upper Drava valley. The city evolved from the market and fair centre, under the former castle with the former mitnica facility and so the city became a safe haven for Drava transport, and later a larger railway crossing that grew into a modern settlement, divided by the Drava River to the left and right embankment. The municipality is intertwined with historical details.
The most prominent are the timber rafters who transport tourists on the Drava River nowadays, the famous St. Vid church in Dravograd, the outstanding ossuary in Libeliče, the museum collection on Nazi violence in Dravograd, and the Bukovje mansion with an exhibition on the 1991 battles in the Koroška region.
The area of Košenjak–Velka and the Dravograd Lake are the most naturally interesting parts of the Dravograd landscape. The town is also known for a rare mineral Dravit.
