From wide view to wide view

We start at the Hahnenschritt hiking car park and take the right path at the fork at the end of the parking lot. Now follow this path straight ahead for about 1.2 km. The well-walkable path leads past the Bürgermeisterhöhle after a few meters. After about 600 m we already experience the first wide view. Once the 1.2 km are done, turn right at the Y-junction. After 75 m, turn right again to stay on the main path. Upon reaching the "Sommerberg" shelter, continue left on the signposted "Pfälzer Weinsteig" (white-red wave). Please follow this for about 530 m. At the next Y-fork, go right and then immediately left after 25 m. From this point, it is about 830 m to the Sühnekreuz. Here you get a breathtaking view over the Rhine plain and Hambacher Schloss from above. At the Sühnekreuz, as well as at many other points on the circular route, there is the opportunity for a short break on one of the picnic benches. The route continues to the next viewpoint. After about 130 m, we rejoin the signposted hiking trail "Pfälzer Weinsteig" and follow it for 800 m until we reach Bergstein. After another great view, continue on the Pfälzer Weinsteig to the Speierheld shelter. At this point, we need to be careful due to the many path options: we walk directly past the entrance of the shelter and look towards the yellow signpost reading "Grünes Bänk'l 0.7 km / Anschluss". We follow this small path indicated by the signpost for 1.7 km until shortly before the Kühungerquelle. Here, there is once again the opportunity for a short break on a resting bench. Now it goes uphill on the path shortly before the Kühungerquelle, towards Hohe Loog Haus. Always keep right during the almost 700 m. Upon arrival at Hohe Loog Haus, you can enjoy both the great view over the Pfälzerwald Biosphere Reserve and also relax comfortably in the outdoor area or in the managed hut (Please check opening hours and current Corona regulations beforehand!). Refreshed, continue over Bildbaum back to our starting point. We reach Bildbaum by following the path straight ahead for about 460 m after Hohe Loog Haus. Once there, continue straight to the Y-junction where we take the right path. After 1.2 km our circular route is finished and we have reached our starting point again.

Sturdy and well-broken-in footwear is advantageous.

From the Edenkoben motorway exit, turn towards Edenkoben. At the first two roundabouts, take the first exit each time. At the next three roundabouts, take the second exit each time and drive towards St. Martin. At the end of the road, turn right into Totenkopfstraße. Follow Totenkopfstraße straight ahead for about 4.5 km. At the junction after the Hüttenhohl parking lot, turn right onto L515. After about 1.5 km, the start and end point of the hike is on the left side: the Hahnenschritt hiking car park.

On Saturdays as well as Sundays and public holidays between May 1 and October 31, bus line 503 runs from the main station in Neustadt an der Weinstraße via Maikammer and St. Martin up to the Kalmit (highest peak of the Pfälzerwald Biosphere Reserve). The starting point of this hike, the Hahnenschritt hiking car park, is located directly at the bus stop "Zur Hohe Loog", which is the penultimate station on this line.

We ask for mutual consideration when parking. Please make sure that you occupy only one parking space with your vehicle. Do not block rescue routes and access ways. If all parking spaces are occupied, please drive to the next one and do not park on forest and farm roads or at the roadside.

Always behave considerately, kindly, and attentively towards everyone you meet along the way. Pay attention to nature, do not destroy plants and always stay on the paths. Try to avoid excessive noise and leave the forest before dusk. Remember a garbage bag for on the go and take your waste back home. Please keep your dog on a leash at all times. Other visitors and animals will thank you. For your own safety, observe all path closures, including on weekends. Park only in designated parking areas. Leave space for rescue vehicles and agricultural machinery. Give priority to agricultural and forestry traffic.
