Tabarz became a state-recognised Kneipp health resort in 2001 and a Kneipp spa in 2016. The town has around 4000 inhabitants, 2 spa clinics, a thermal spa with a spa centre, 3 hotels, many holiday flats and private accommodation.

There is also a hiking hostel on the 916m high Großer Inselsberg. Good air, well-developed hiking trails (150 km), 2 Kneipp facilities, alpine climbing in the Lauchagrund, a riding arena, in winter tracked trails , downhill runs with ski lifts and the sports and health spa TABBS offer many spa guests and holidaymakers relaxing and eventful hours all year round.
There is also a summer toboggan run and the Marienglashöhle cave in the immediate vicinity.
