The Simplon Pass was already an important crossing in the Middle Ages, linking the Valais region with northern Italy. Even today, the Simplon Pass, along with the Lötschberg, remains one of the most important north-south routes.
For hikers, the Simplon region offers a fantastic mountain panorama and beautiful trails. The two Italian-influenced communities of Simplon Village and Gondo-Zwischbergen on the southern side of the pass boast a rich culture. Simplon Village, in particular, has a beautifully preserved and worth-seeing old village center.
